I heard somewhere that some connectors (composite, s-vidéo, yuv, dvi, hdmi) have a limited resolution support.
Here's a list of the most popular connectors with
with their (supposed) maximum resolution (tell me if i'm wrong) :
Composite : 380i (maybe 220i, but it seems to be a small value...)
SVideo : 400i
YUV : 480i
HDMI : 1080i
DVI : 2400I

Resolution is only one measure of video picture quality. Signal to noise and bit depth are also important.
